Our Mission

Oakland Community Housing, Inc. (OCHI) is a non-profit affordable housing developer. Our mission is to make a positive impact on people's lives by producing and managing quality affordable housing for rental and homeownership.  We are equally committed to improving the quality of neighborhoods, and to helping people gain self-sufficiency and opportunity.

Faith Based Partnerships

OCHI is proud of our work with religious organizations, who helped found OCHI in 1973, and have called on us often to develop and manage property.  It is an honor when we can provide practical tools to realize a group’s religious and civic commitment to healthy homes and neighborhoods for all. Currently we are working with:

  • North Oakland Missionary Baptist Church
  • (Sylvester Rutledge Manor; Linden Terrace; Filbert Street Homes)
  • Downs Memorial United Methodist Church (Bishop Roy C. Nichols Senior Housing)
  • Beth Eden Baptist Church (Beth Eden Senior Housing)
  • Village Baptist Church, Marin City (Village Oduduwa)
  • Our Homeownership Program

Our award-winning Infill Homeownership Initiative, the first of its kind in the nation, takes formerly vacant lots and turns them into brand new homes for people with low or moderate incomes who otherwise could not afford to buy a house in the Bay Area.  We capitalize on dramatic improvements in manufactured homes to assure quality construction at a cost effective price.  As of September 2006 we have 13 such homes completed, 8 nearing completion, 8 scheduled to break ground this fall, and more planned for next year.  Contact our Homeownership Outreach Coordinator for information about homes for sale or if you know of a vacant lot to develop.

Our Properties

OCHI’s rental portfolio has assisted literally thousands of renters and their families whose incomes fall between 0 and 60% of the area median. Oakland Community Housing Management, our property management company, manages most of the 17 rental developments we have completed.

Community Services

OCHI provides a wide range of community services to residents of our rental properties.  Our Services Department collaborates with other local organizations to offer programs such as health care and substance abuse counseling for formerly homeless people, after-school programs for youth, community gardens, and community computer labs for families and seniors

Our History

OCHI was created in 1973 to serve Oakland residents whose homes were demolished to make way for Oakland’s City Center project, and has gone on to develop some 1,200 affordable homes.

Why Affordable Housing?

The Bay Area ranks at the bottom of home affordability nationwide, for both owners and renters.  This problem affects everyone who struggles to keep up with high costs and keep roots in their communities.  In this high-demand environment, sadly, unfair housing practices can be harder to prevent and fight.  The only true solution to the housing crisis is to build, sell, rent and maintain homes that people can afford.
